My XP Home system says:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Repair console is no help. Is there anyway out of this? If Ireload windows
on top of the old installation will I loose files, programs and/or settings?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

What are talking about? A 'Repair Install' will suffice, and no programs should be lost. It might be advisable to backup any valuable data files - just in case.

Boot from the XP CD, press Enter at the 1st screen, accept the License, then select the Windows installation that you want to repair and press 'R'.

Nope that will just give you a new installation with a new
registry file which contains none of your original
settings, users definitions, devices and all the other
good stuff stored in the registry.

That and I've personally fixed at least a dozen computers
that have suffered "corrupted registry" back to exactly
the way it was before it happened using the KB article I
cite.
