Recovery Failure - massive crash

After a hacker attack into a chat room infested the machine in question
(which runs XP), it was clear that a System Recovery was needed. As there
was no point to go back to with Restore, Recovery was actually mandatory.
Recovery was run, and it crashed.

After registering, etc, the screen went black and the computer froze and
then restarted on its own. Thinking all was well I didn't expect to see an
error window saying that the system did not finish installing and to please
restart setup. Unfortunately, the machine in question did not come with
recovery disks, but rather a D drive for that purpose of backing up and
recovering.

So, since the only thing I see upon startup is BIOS, splash screen, and then
the error box in the middle of the screen, does anyone have a suggestion how
I can redo setup? Otherwise this computer appears to be permanently out of
commission...

Any help or ideas is appreciated!

What keyboard keys (or other method) does the manufacturer use for entering
the recovery from D:? Do you have documentation? You have not given us any
description of the computer.

I know you can call HP and they will send a set of recovery disks. I'm not
sure about the others but I feel any PC maker would do the same.

The computer is an HP Pavilion. To enter the System Recovery, you must get
to the program from the Programs in the Start Menu. It's in with all the
other HP specific programs. There is no keystroke that will do it for you.
I wish there was. As for anything else I may have tried, the computer won't
allow me to do the F8 - enter Safe Mode option, nor will it allow me any
access to DOS or anything else helpful like that. The only thing I can
appear to do upon startup is F1 for BIOS/Setup.

The last time we called HP to get them to send us disks the only thing they
would do was to tell us how to access what we needed via the computer. They
didn't want to handle anything further.

What happens if you press R at the point where you have been pressing F8?
An old Packard Bell I had entered Recovery mode that way. Just a thought.

On most HP's restart the computer and when the HP logo appears start tapping
the F10 key and that will take you to system recovery. Proceed following the
instructions for a non-destructive recovery. A non destructive recovery
usually saves most files & folders & documemnts, notice I said usually.
-----To do a destructive recovery (where the computer disk is formatted and
the computer is like you took it out of the store-all saved items are
erased). When the system recovery box appears after restarting and tapping
the F10 key then click "advanced" to proceed with a destructive recovery. The
non destructive is best as it saves most things but you might need the
destructive. Remember you will lose everything & it will be like you got it
from the store. Save anything important on a floppy or an email account
(Yahoo,Hotmail) that is not stored on your computer. All Outlook Express
messages will be lost and you have to set up your email accounts again. I
just had to do one (destructive) that worked fine but it takes time. With the
destructive you have to download all Windows Updates again.
Put "HP Desktop PCs - Performing a System Recovery in Microsoft Windows XP"
in Google and it should take you to instructions from HP. Good luck.
