Here is my situation. I have a laptop that had windows xp on it. The
laptop had various files such as word documents/excel, but more importantly
a bunch of contacts and e-mails stored in .pst. My wife did a fresh install
of windows xp without backing up my data. Is there a way to recovery my
data after a fresh installation has been done? I know there are programs
from vendors such as ontrack and easeus. I don't know if these programs are
effective.

Thanks in Advance for all your help

It depends. If your wife allowed the hard disk to be formatted
before re-installing Windows then your files are most likely gone
forever. If she did not then you should have a look at the various
subfolders of "c:\documents and settings". As you say, you need
to look for .PST files.

Your problem was not so much caused by your wife not
backing up your files prior to the re-installation but by you
not adopting standard backup procedures. They require
you to back up your important files to an independent medium
regularly, e.g. once a week. A 2.5" hard disk in an external
USB case is a low-cost and highly effective backup medium.
Unfortunately many people defer its purchase until after they
have suffered a major disaster such as theft, physical damage,
file corruption, defective disk etc. etc.

You backed up to Cd. Use it.

All,
I recognize the importance of backing up data on a regular basis. While I
normally backup data on a weekly basis, there is about maybe a week's worth
of data that I would like to recover if possible. So without being
retrospective or speaking of preventive measures, does anyone recommend a
particular software or service that might be able to recover any data?

Thanks Again
