Windows XP has failed to load due a suspect error in
agp440.sys. I have atempted do disable this in the
recovery console as advised in article Q324764 however the
RC will not allow me access to required directory! Any
ideas why?

The Recovery Console, by default, only allows access to certain folders/folder trees. You can work around this in XP Pro by going to Start, Run and entering GPEDIT.MSC Go to Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security Options. Locate the entry for:

Recovery Console: Allow floppy copy and access to all drives and folders.

Double click this entry and set it to Enabled.

You'll need to boot into Safe Mode, since you can't boot Windows normally.

For XP Home, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

Locate the SecurityLevel value in the right pane. Double click it and set it to 1.

Unfortunatly when trying to load Safe Mode Windows hangs
when trying to load agp440.sys. Is there another way of
allowing access to all folders and/or correcting the
agp440.sys error?

I have managed to change the registry setting however it
has had no effect. I think the problem with the Recovery
Console is due to it not detecting the windows
installation (it does find using the bootcfg command).

The only CD-Rom I have for XP is the one provided by the
PC Manufacturer which does not allow me access to the
recovery console. This means I have used the 6 disks
downloaded from Microsoft. Could this be the reason RC is
not finding Windows?

Thanks for your help, so far!

The above boot disk contains an offline registry editor
that may allow you to change this setting. Read the
documentation carefully.

No, the boot disk set should allow you to access the recovery console, as well, as I recall.
