recovery console problems

I'm having trouble getting into my recovery console to try to fix a CWS
infection by getting at the hidden .dll.
Initally I couldn't access the recovery console, because at the login, it
wouldn't accept any administrator password. I've gone through the knowledge
base, and have tried to install hotfix 308402, but during the install I get a
message that the SP on the system is newer than the update I'm trying to
install (308402). It did this when I only had SP1 installed. I've since
installed SP2 hoping that it would help fix my issue with the recovery
console. Do I need to uninstall both SP1 and SP2 to run the hotfix, then
re-install the SPs?
Any other ideas?
Thank you,
Marcus Williams

Recovery Console Password-
On many XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it
won't recognize your password. This registry edit causes the Recovery Console
not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Professional.
Start | Run | Regedit
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

Have you tried Ad-Aware's ADS scan? it searches for that "hidden .dll"?
Ad-Aware SE - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

This also scans for a hidden .dll
