Recovery Console Logon: Invalid Password

I installed Windows Recovery Console in XP Pro for the first time. My
administrator password is rejected as being invalid in WRC. The
password is fine for administrator logon for a normal bootup. I
changed the administrator password with the same results with WRC.

I know I can change the security setting under Admin tools/security
options. This is a workaround but reduces security; I'd rather get to
the root cause.

Any ideas how to correct this odd behavior? I can't find any mention
of such a problem in the MSKB titles.

Thanks,

I missed this KB when I did my search. This looks to be exactly the
problem. I emailed Dell to see if they are willing to correct the
problem, send me the hotfix, or a link. Files on my system are
Spcmdcon.sys file version 5.1.2600.0 but need 5.1.2600.15. My DLL is
Srrstr.dll version 5.1.2600.1142 but need 5.1.2600.21.
Do you know if I can manually replace these files or do they need to
replaced by the hotfix discussed in the KB Q30842?

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Sorry for the delay,

The install method would depend on What Dell sends you. They may have
automated the replacement of the files. If not, these can be copied in
manually but use Safe Mode and make sure to put a copy in the dllcache
folder if the older one exists there as well.
