OK, I'm not really sure what happened, I went to restart my computer, I shut
down all the programs I was in like normal. Up pops this blue box and it
starts to say deleting index this and that. So, me not being familiar with
this message, I just turn the computer off. Well when I turn it back on I get
a black screen with a blinking cursor, it will not load windows and will not
go any further. I put in the XP disk and run system recovery. and run chkdsk
/r upon the advice of someone in a chatroom (probably not my best idea) and
then afterwards I run fixmbr. I restart and and it says ntdrl (or something
to that effect ) not found hit ctrl alt del to restart so i do and run system
recovery again. Basically I need to know if there is anyway to save the files
on my hard drive. I've been told that reinstalling windows will cause me to
lose them, not sure if that information is correct or not. I really just want
to get the files off the hard drive, if i can do say and save windows without
formatting the hard drive or using the restore disk I would very much like to
do that. I just need any advice that can be given. Thank you in advance.

Check here http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm If you can't fix
it following Mile's suggestions then it is likely that you can recover data
off the drive if the hard drive isn't damaged. There are a variety of ways
to do this. One of the easiest is to pull the drive and connect it to
another system as slave. The drive will appear as a second drive in that
computer and you can copy off your data. The second system needs to be
running Windows 2000 or XP as it is highly likely your drive is formatted as
NTFS and a Windows Me or 98 system won't be able to recognize it.

Another option is to use a bootable CD like Bart's PE that contains CD
writing software. This version of Bart's PE called UBCD likely contains all
you need http://www.ubcd4win.com/

If the hard drive is damaged then you maybe out of luck trying to recover
data on your own and a company that deals in data retrieval may be needed.
These services are generally very expensive.

The easiest way is the use a live distribution of linux. That means the
entire o/s is on the cd. aCTUALLY a good one is slax linux. not slaxware
but just slax. google it. download the free image then burn the iso to a
cd. with the cd in tray reboot the system and the linux o/s will boot up
(dont worry it is not insttalling it on your hard driive it runs completely
off the cd), then you can either burn the files u want or store them on a
flash drive.

Data recovery/backup of hard drive that is corrupted or certain types of
physical damage can be done at geek squad in best buys for $99.
Harry is correct though, if it is a badly damages hard drive then data
recovery specialist like ontrack are needed and it is costly. appr $1000 and
up. Static rooms are needed in those cases.
