Did a factory restore on my compaq 5310US the other day
and it worked well. Tried to do it again today because I
wanted to change the config. Only got error code #102:9

it refuses to continue past the menu screen and tells me
to remove the disk.

Do I only get ONE factory restore and THATS it?

Please email if you have an answer, I dont know anything
about newsgroups. Found this on a Windows site.
Thanks
.
Why are you doing a restore to change the config? You
change the config by running CMD (command prompt).
Anyhow, you'll need to boot in SAFE mode. Reboot your PC
and as soon as you boot, start tapping the F8 key to put
it in SAFE mode. Check boot with CD-ROM support. Or if
you have a floppy boot disk insert that. Change (CD\)
directory to "C:\" drive. Now type sfc /scannow this
will create a search for missing or corrupt files. Have
your OEM WinXP CD ready to insert and follow the prompts.
You can go to below website for more info if the problem
persists: Repair XP

What "config" are you talking about?

Why would he need to goto safe mode? All he has is probably have a damaged
recovery cd.

These instructions are when you boot from a win9x floppy boot disk. They
have nothing to do with safe mode.

First sfc /scannow does not need to be done from safe mode, although it
doesn't hurt. Second he can't do that cause he doesn't have a XP oem cd, he
has a compaq recovery cd. Recovery cd will only format the computer and
install xp and the oem apps.
