Recovering replaced files

I have inadvertently replaced an important word file with another file with
the same name, is there a way to recover the original file?

If the original file got overwritten then you have to retrieve it from your
backup medium.
 
The file was not backed up on any other drive is that what you mean by a
backup medium?
 
Yes. It comes back to the basic rule of computing: All important files
must be backed up to an indenpendent medium at regular intervals.
The backup frequency is a business decision: The cost of the
backup process vs. the cost of losing important files.

No, as the new file was written to the same place on the hard drive,
thus overwriting the original.

Hello,

This is not always the case. Often, Office applications will write out
a new copy of the file to be saved before deleting the original file
and renaming the new copy. As such, it is often possible to retrieve
past revisions.

Use something like 'Restoration' this to check for deleted files:
