In a hurry, I overwrote a word document with an earlier
version. File name was the same, from a different
drive. I thought I was doing the reverse--overwriting
the old with the new. Not so. So is there a way to
recover the the newer version? NOTE: I am using Office
2003.

Only if you made a backup of your data in the meantime. Or if you had the
box checked to automatically create a backup original when opening. Note
that opening the replacing file will erase this backup, too.

Opening the replacement file will not erase the backup. *Saving* the
replacement file will replace the backup.
