Hello and Help.

We have overwriten and saved an Excel file that should
not have been overwriten and saved! Does anyone know how
we can recover the original file?

Thank you very much for your input.

Tom

Windows 2003 has just such an application for this. Windows 2000 does not. I think it is called Shadow Copy. Basically what you need is something like Visual SafeSource where things that are going to be edited must be checked out and checked in with an approval by someone in charge. In lieu of these I don't think there is much that can be done. The original file is probably on the harddrive somewhere but that information can easily be lost or nigh impossible to get just by rebooting the machine or accessing another program. In that case you would need to go to a disk forensics specialist like a Police Department. And we are taking a minimum of probably $10,000 US. And still no guarantee the information could be retrieved in any usable form.

Certainly: from your backup media. In the case where no backup / recovery
strategy exists in your enterprise, you should consider applying one. Here,
full backups are performed twice a week and an incremental backup every
other week day. Media is duplicated and kept at 2 remote, secure locations.
