Hello, I'm hoping someone has any ideas or point me the
right direction. I opened a word 2000 document that
contained some text. After editing and deleting some info
I accidently saved the document. Is there any way to
recover the document in the orginal state? I'm using
Win98 also. Thanks.

If you have "Automatically create backup copy" checked on the Save tab of
Tools | Options, display "All Files" and look for "Backup of
<filename>.wbk," which will be the previously saved version. If you don't
have this option enabled, now you know why you should! See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/AutomaticSave.htm

Hi, Nelson,

You aren't going to want to hear this, but maybe it'll come in handy
next time...

First, if you have "Always create backup copy" checked in Tools >
Options > Save, then look in the same folder for a file named "Backup
of xyz.wbk". This will be a copy of the file as it was at the time
before you last saved. Since most people don't know about this, it
probably isn't checked.

Second, if you realized your mistake after you saved *but before you
closed the document* then you can hit Undo as many times as it takes
to get back to the starting condition and then save again. But once
you close the document, all the Undo information is gone, pfft.

Third, off-the-wall-and-over-the-top, if the document is really really
valuable and there's no way you can remember what you did to it, you
can spend thousands of dollars on a data-recovery service who will
take your hard drive apart and study the residual magnetism on the
platters.
