Hi
I have a dell Laptop with XP and service pack 2 installed.
Yesterday i started getting a blue screen and message saying that new
hardware or software is installed.I haven't installed anything.

Windows won't boot up and it justs hangs on the blue screen.
I called Dell and they say some files are corrupted and you have to install
XP again but it will erase all my data.

Is there a way i can recover my data? They are mostly pictures.

Thanks
Manish

Hello

Maybe if you can post the error message that comes with the bluescreen then possibly someone\somebody can give you an answer and get your system back up again. Dell techs are known to be as others not very helpful at times.

Messages about new hardware or software installed do not normally
display on a blue screen so I am assuming that you have been getting
both:
a: blue screens with error messages
and
b: popup messages about new hardware/software installed.

The blue screens are probably the most critical part. Can you
provide any information about the content of these screens? The
complete verbatim text would be best, but anything may be better than
nothing.

There may be several different ways to recover your data, but first of
all we need to find out as much as we can about the actual problem,
which is where the information from the blue screens is so essential.

Fixing the wrong problem can sometimes make things worse rather than
better, so it is best to find out as much as possible about the
problem so that (hopefully) the right fix can be applied.

Good luck

If you want to recover data which would be a really good thing to do before
you try any restoration efforts. One option is to use a bootable CD like
UBCD http://www.ubcd4win.com/ It is based on Bart's PE which is a stripped
down version of Windows XP that you create using the download file and a
Windows XP CD. Once created the UBCD disc will have a number of very handy
tools including CD Burning software. Boot you computer with it, soon you
will see a familiar desktop. Locate the CD writing software and use it to
copy the picture files you need to save off of your C drive.

Another option is to remove the hard drive from your computer and connect it
as a slave device to a second computer that is running Windows 2000 or XP.
From there you can simply copy your important files off your drive. Remember
to reset the jumper to master before you put it back in your computer.
