I had read in the Excel group a while back that there were programs that I
could download to recover a password protected Excel file. Does anyone know
if there is one available to do this for Access?

Yes and no. There are two types of security in Access. First is the
Database Password and the second is full Access Security. Most of the
password crackers that work for Excel will also work to return the Database
password. However, I know of no downloadable or commercially available
program that will crack Access Security.

They're out there, Roger. Most of them charge about $45 US for a utility to
crack username/password information (I've found one that is free). However,
most of these require the workgroup file (that was used to secure the mdb)
to be available. A properly secured mdb would not be shipped with that mdw,
but with a production mdw that doesn't have the mdb owner in it.

That said, I believe that there are a few that will recover
username/passwords without the mdw - those are rare and cost considerably
more ($150? or something).

Bottom line is that Access is a file-based system. Users need full access
to the file, and those determined can break into it.
