I have a user that changed his computer from a domain to a work group and now
is not able to log in. do you have any suggestions on how to get a password
recovered so the user can login to his PC?

Restart the computer, Tap F8 While the system is booting and select Safe
Mode from the list. In Safe Mode Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts
User Accounts > Click on his user name > Click Reset password > enter a new
password > Click OK > Click OK > close control panel > restart windows > and
log on with the new password.

That won't work, Kemco. The user disjoined his computer from the domain.
The computer will need to be rejoined to the domain by a systems
administrator. The systems administrator will know the user's domain
password. Then the systems administrator should explain to the user how
to use his/her laptop in his/her home network (presumably the reason
the user tinkered with logon).

If the computer was disjoined from the network you will have to use the local
log on, on the computer in which I stated how to reset the old user password.
I realize you are not resetting the domain user password that was not my
intent. After they reset the password and log onto the local computer then
they can rejoin the computer to the domain and the user can log on with the
domain user name and password.

Unfortunatley when the user disjoined from the domain he neglected to note
the administrators password or a local user account name and password. So I
am stuck even trying to log into the computer at all. Is there a way to
either recover the local administrator password or reset it with out actully
logging in to the computer?

Log onto the local administrator's account. Change its password to a
blank with NTpasswd. Set a new domain password for the user at the
server and rejoin the workstation to the domain with a local account
that has domain administrative privileges.

By changing the computer from the domain to a workgroup, your user
has destroyed the trust between the domain and the machine. In doing
so, he have also rendered his domain login credentials as invalid.

You need to be physically connected to the domain network, you need to
have administrative privileges to the workstation, and you need to have
administrative privileges on the domain. Then you can add the machine
back on to the domain, after having first deleted the computer's old
domain account (unless you've also renamed the computer).
