recover a user directory

Hi need help recovering a user dorectory, XP craped out and I had to
reinstall the os, I installed over the old version in an attempt to
preserve my old data. Now XP will not allow me to access the directory
tree, how do I change the permissions on the directory.

In XP Home you have to boot in safe mode to see the security tab. In XP
Pro you have to disable simple file sharing.
