My computer shut off after about 5 minutes of using it and when it restarted
it said, The system has recovered from a serious error. I was suddenly using
a temporary user profile that the computer created for me and my other one
was gone. Under administrator i looked in documents and settings for my
documents and folders containing digital pictures adn such adn cant find any
of it. It may have been a virus but i doubt since i have norton 2006 updated
frequently. Is there any way i can get my documents back or at least the
folders that used to be on my desktop that held my didgital pictures?
Thanks,

The symptoms are definitely the same as described in the microsoft support
section but the very first thing it tells me to do is go to documents and
settings and find my old users "my documents", which are not there. Under the
users that are left there is nothing in the my documents folders. There is
still the same amount of memory left on my hard drive as before this happened
so i doubt if it has been deleted though. Any ideas?
Thanks,

You might try enabling the whole drive to show all files, including
system files. If for some reason your user folder under Documents &
settings was changed to a system folder you wouldn't be able to see it
unless you changed the folder options.

Kelly explained on 2/3/2006 :

How do I enable the whole drive to show all the files? Under documents and
settings folder it has my old profile name, but there is nothing but emtpy
folders in it and any other profiles. Please help if you can.

It sounds like you already have this set, but to see everything go to
Folder Options>View and find the options (three boxes) pertaining to
hidden files and extensions.

Otherwise, I would stop using the computer immediately and run data
recovery software on it. The software I use is Ontrack's Easy Recovery
Pro, but it is quite expensive. You can try other free data recovery
programs (I'll give you a few links) but since I've not used them I
don't know how effective they are. If you try some free ones and get no
joy, consider taking the machine to a computer repair shop that has
professional data recovery software. This won't be your local version
of BigStoreUSA.

The last resort is a professional data recovery firm. I like
DriveSavers, but there are others. These firms' services are not
inexpensive, but only you can determine the value of your data.

Whatever you choose, the longer you use the computer the greater the
chances that your data will be unrecoverable.

To enable showing everything:
Open "My Computer", single click the C drive, go to Tools/Folder
Options
Click the "View" tab and go down the list, enable "Show hidden files
and folders".

That should be all you need to see everything. You could also uncheck
the "Hide protected operating system files" but that is not advised as
you might accidently delete or change a system file and then you would
really be screwed.

Hope this helps

ebest thing to do now is take it in to a local computer store and see what
they can do. Thanks for everyones time and ideas.
