Recognizing new DVD RW drive

I recently installed a new Pioneer DVR-A08 drive in my computer. I have XP
home with sp2. plug & play recognized the drive and installed it but it will
only play and record cd's. it does not recognize dvd movies or blank dvd rw
discs. i installed the disc that came with the drive. I cannot manually run
or look at dvd disc contents with either explorer, my computer or power desk
5. properties shows it as a cd rw drive. thanks for any help!
