Recognising USB Drive

I have a 13GB Seagate hdd connected via a USB 2 cable. The whole thing is
fitted internally and takes power from the Molex, with (at present) the USB
lead run outside and plugged into an external port. XP Home (now with
SP2)has recognised this setup once or twice, but currently does not, so it
is necessary to unplug the USB lead and then plug it in again, whereupon XP
wakes up and sees it. Is there any way to ensure that XP always sees it, so
I can bring the lead back inside and connect it to the internal USB port?

Thanks Carey. The drive is being recognised again after a restart. We
shall see if XP deigns to continue to do so in future! I used the update
driver procedure, and although the existing driver was the only one found,
perhaps it was sufficient to awaken the slumbering XP.

Further to my last message saying the links now work, I did a restart and
they don't again! Good old XP. I'll try registering urlmon.dll again, and
maybe the others in the list.

My previous mail went to the wrong thread! My fault entirely.

XP doesn't recognise the USB drive again after a cold boot. It does if I
disconnect and reconnect the cable. I get two pings, one for disconnect and
one for reconnect, so something in the machine must have noted the presence
of the USB drive even if it didn't show in Explorer.
