Hi, Why won't some drives only recognise original (not copies) discs. Is
there a signature or something that does this. Thanks

Some disks employ a mastering method where an "Error" is
created on the disk, but the original disk knows of it and can
ignore it. However, if you copy the disk the resultant copy
will not have the "Masking" feature - so the defect becomes
a show stopper and prevents the disk from being used. It's a
little ironic that a disk requires a defect to be usable.

Some pariticularly old drives just don't have the ability to read
certian kinds of CDRs/CDRWs. Somethimes this can be fixed by updating
the firmware of the drive. If you can find it.

The other possibility is copy protection. But I don't think that it
applies to your case.

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, your some drives cannot recognize discs. Could you let me
know the issue occurs on all discs or some specific discs?

In Device Manager, please check if you can see any error messages appear in
connection with any CD-ROM device.

If so, you may follow these steps to delete some corrupted registry keys:

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry
incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These
problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at
your own risk.

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11C
E-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11C
E-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.

Note: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD
recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem
recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

If the issue persists, I agree with Paul's suggestion. You may update the
firmware of the drive to see if it can help.

Hope that helps!

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao
