recently used files

Have just re-installed Office 2003 and the "Recently Used
Files" option is greyed out. (Was OK before).
Needless to say Microsoft is not a lot of help. Can
anybody out there tell me where I've gone wrong?
Problem is there in Excel and Word.
 
In Word, go to Tools>Options>General. Check 'Recently used file list' and
set the number of entries to at least 1, up to 9.

C'mon, Chad. I said the recently used file list is greyed
out, i.e. I can't do anything to it!
 
Same problem so what adjustment do I make to Tweak UI to allow me to tick the
Recently used File box in Word. It is greyed so I cannot access it.
 
I found that after closing TweakUI, closing Word and Excel and doing a full
power down and reboot that the Recently Used Files option worked. Of course
it started out empty and only "remembered" files saved from that point
onward. It's been 3 weeks with no further issues. Good luck.
