Regarding your post, since this started recently you have two options:
1. Uninstall the most recent updates using Control Panel Add/Remove.
-or-
2. Roll Back the system to a more stable state using System Restore:

| Recent XP Home Windowsupdates seem to have caused havoc
| with my clients computer:
|
| Adminstrator accounts can logon, but explorer.exe thrashes
| at 100% CPU, and not even the taskbar will load.
|
| User accouns can logon, and use some tools, but eg IE6SP1
| will close if browsing online.
|
| None of the recently active trojans are in residence -
| HKCU/- and
| HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/ and
| Run Services have nothing malicious in them.
