Recent documents

Despite my setting an option to display 12 recent documents and pinning four
to the list they do not appear when Excel loads. I have looked in the
registry but there is no value for Recent Documents. Any ideas please?
 
How are you opening the files? In excel doing a file/open, or by double
clicking the file name in windows explorer?
