I've tried removing the email scanning from Norton to no avail and a
couple
of other suggested options, but nothing.
When I shut down recently I had a big update install come through. Could
this be a problem?

More likely Norton updated itself and is causing the problem. Norton should
be totally uninstalled then run this utility:

Then recheck your settings against the instructions xxxxxxxxxx give on
their webpage.
