When I go to my inbox, the only way I can retreive messages is by clicking on
Tools, the send/receive, then send/receive all. Can I retreive messages
without doing this?

Having absolutely no information to go on, I would have to say, probably.

Outlook version? Mail account type? Send/receive settings? Automatic
polling interval set?

I'm using outlook 2003. Mail account type POP3/SMTP. I don't know about
send/receive settings or Automatic polling interval

Under Tools=>Options->Mail Setup->send/receive, is the box checked to send
immediately when connected? If you press the send/receive button and look
at your send/receive settings, is the box checked to schedule a send/receive
every xx minutes? Is the interval specified at least 10 minutes?
