"Received" email is missing

Example. My boss had 13 messages sitting on his pop3 server. We opened
Outlook and clicked Send/Receive and we were prompted that we were indeed
receivng 13 messages. The only thing is, we could only see 8 of them. We
checked the "unread" folder and there were only 8 there. We checked the "Junk
mail" and "In box" and "Deleted folder". The 5 missing emails were nowhere to
be found. Has anyone else come accross this problem. (By the way, we have no
filters set up either)
 
Do you have webmail access to that server? If so can you check to see if
the 5 missing messages are still sitting there?

How do you know for sure there were 13 messages waiting? Just because of
the send/receive message or ?

We had something very similar happen today at our location. We have a user
who the email server logs say downloaded 8 messages. They do not appear in
the user's inbox or anywhere else that we can find.
