I need to rebuild the Microsoft Registry. Windows XP home edition
restore won't open and I got a Installation Unsuccessful message when
I tried to download & install SP3. If I clear the restore points I
can't go back and restore the registry or other corrupted files.

Bob - there is no SP3 for Windows XP (we have just released SP2 - see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
If your machine is seriously messed up you may be better to perform a repair
install.
If that does not rectify the problem then you may be required to completely
cleanly reinstall.
