I can't di this and I need to in order for me to address another software
problem. When I press F8, A screen eventually appears that asks me to select
a boot drive. There is no option to start in smart mode with network
connection. What do I do???

That's because it's called Safe Mode, not Smart Mode.

Using the term "smart mode" when referring to Windoze is really funny. It's
on par with the term "military intelligence". Right, Leythos?

Thanks Carey, but I consulted that article and what the article states does
not appear on my screen. A DOS screen appaers that requests me to chose a
boot option such as a drive or c: drive or d: drive ...

This is a total guess but you may have a BIOS that uses the F8 key to
chose you boot device.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei"

Press F8 the first time, then- at the "DOS" screen:
Hold one finger on F8, one on Enter. Press Enter and then F8 very fast
afterward.
You should get the screen you want, then.
