Rebooting GC DC on a weekly basis, best practice?

I have a customer that claims it is a Microsoft best practice to reboot DCs,
especially those running the GC under Windows 2000 on a weekly basis. Anyone
ever heard of Microsoft claiming this to be a best practice and where it
might be documented?

Thanks,
Van

Sure. As a function of time server RAM becomes fragmented. Not unlike the way a hard disk
becomes fragmented. Rebooting the server puts the memory at point of zero fragmentation.

No.

| Is there not a software utility that will defrag RAM?

I've run Windows 2000 DCs for months without a reboot, except for the
occasional reboot for patches. There is no real need to reboot servers
on a periodic basis.

Cheers,

Cliff

It depends on how static or dynamic the server is in both loading NT Services and being used
as a non-dedicated server. RAM will fragment. This is true with *any* OS, workstation or
server, regardless of the vendor.

Static Services -- Those OS Services/Daemons that are loaded once and stay loaded.

Dynamic Services -- Those OS Services/Daemons that are loaded and unloaded at will of the OS
or by the administrator.

| How does one set static or dynamic modes?
