Rebooting (erasing the memory)

My computer has been overrun with viruses and Norton Antivirus cannot get rid of them. I have decided to reboot the memory- save all the needed info to a disk and delete the rest, then start over with a clean computer. I know it can be done, but I don't know how to do it- any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
