Rebooting and slow XP

My system is powered by AMD Athalon XP 1800 with 512MB SDRAM. I have been using it for arround 2 years without problem until recently when it starts to go into a rebooting loop whenever I power up from shutdown. The only way to boot into the system is to shut it down via the on/off switch when it starts to reboot, and after 3 to 4 such tries, it boots successfully, albeit at a snail pace.

Now when the system is up and running, it is extremely slow. I have scanned for viruses, ran Adaware, etc to no avail. I have replaced power supply, clean install a new HDD but problem persists. Before I dump the system for good, I thot I would make a last ditch attempt and yell for HELP! HELP, anyone out there. Thanks in advance.

Hi I had a similar problem with my computer with the same setup . The reboot loop could be from a universal usb memory stick/card reader for cameras. Mine was a lexar universal reader . I had to go and get an updated driver. The other thing that can cause it is a bad memory module. Try swapping them around and or just running one and see what happens. Mine was a crucial 256 ddr pc2100 module . I was also told that when this happens with memory modules it corrups windows xp. Hope this helps and good luck
