Reboot several times a day

I am having a terrible problem with my XP Home system with SP2 installed. My
system reboots 2 or 3 times a day with either a device driver error or random
access memory error.

I have swapped out most of the hardware on the system in attempt to isolate
the driver (no success) and I have downloaded and run the MS utility to
check memory; the utility indicates that memory is fine. I have swapped
memory anyway, just in case.

All to no avail.

This started after installing SP2 but not right after so I am not
suspecting, necessarily, a connection with SP2.

Has anyone else seen this kind of a problem?

Thanks for any info or thoughts on the subject.

This has turned into the most unstable system I have run since Windows 95;
maybe even worse than that...

Please post an exact copy of the Stop Error message.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This
should help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly.
Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select
Properties, Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure
and uncheck box before Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied and pasted the message in a further post here.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks VERY much for the quick response. I have turned off automatic

In the original error reports is there any further information if
you double click these links.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

The 0x1d is very wierd (reported out of the 0x8e), but the 0xd1 suggests a
bad driver. Have you updated your drivers?

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for your continuing efforts.

I tried using the link in the original event viewer window and it says no
additional information is available.

I also checked device manager and displayed hidden devices as well. There
are NO question marks on any device.

I ran sigverif.exe and it shows that there are thousands of files that are
not signed. I sorted by file type and then by directory. There are 15 or 20
..drv files in the list and a bunch more .sys files in the system32/driver
folder that are listed. But I didn't see any with a check mark anywhere in
the list. There is a small icon to the left edge of the screen that looks
like a horizontal double arrow; that wouldn't be the check mark, would it?

Thanks again.

Hi,

Thanks for responding.

The only updates I've been doing are through Windows Update. If the drivers
are updated there, I must have them. Update says I am current.

Is there any place else I should look?

I can't remember if there are any drivers on my system that did NOT come
with XP...

Thanks again.

There are three types. Signed, unsigned and unchecked.

Disregard those unchecked and list those unsigned.

Are you confusing unchecked for unsigned?

Hi Gerry,

I'm afraid I'm confused period... :-)

I thought you were referring to a check mark/icon that would be placed next
to an entry or some such thing.

I understand (I think) signed and unsigned but I guess I don't understand
unchecked.

I just went through sigverif.exe and through the log file that it produced.
I can't find anything like "checked", "not checked" or "unchecked"; just "not
signed".

I also reran sigverif.exe to get the counts again on it's status line. They
are:

Found: 3239 Signed: 42 Unsigned: 2231 Files not scanned: 966

Am I missing the point completely?

No you've come up with an unexpected and unhelpful result.

This is illustrated by the result on my own machine.

Found: 3345 Signed: 2346 Unsigned: 10 Files not scanned: 989

which compares to yours

Found: 3239 Signed: 42 Unsigned: 2231 Files not scanned: 96

How old is your machine?

Are there any other Warning or Error Reports in Event Viewer?

Was the machine ever free of these errors?

Hi Gerry,

Wow. That's a pretty amazing difference! Any idea why that would be? I do
have some very old applications running including a Windows 3.1 version of
Quattro Pro, compiled BASIC programs I wrote years ago, MS PDS 7.1 BASIC
development system (DOS application), etc.

My machine is about 3 years old. I installed XP Home just over 2 years ago.
I had originally installed XP over 98SE and that didn't work very well. So
I did a from-scratch, clean install of XP on new hard drives and reinstalled
all my software (at great expense to the management).

I installed SP2 about a year ago, I think, and began having these problems
about 6 months ago. I have replaced everything except the motherboard and
CPU in this machine in an attempt to get rid of these errors. I have even
swapped the power supply in the tower case thinking I might be running on the
edge because of all of the devices installed.

Regarding other errors in event viewer, I discovered something I had not
seen before. I am getting groups of 10 to 20 errors at a time on a hard
disk. Over the past 3 weeks, the errors have moved from one disk to another
as far as the id in the event viewer is concerned. I've copied one of them
here for you to see:

I have seen these same errors for harddisk2, harddisk3 and harddisk4 in the
event viewer. I never see anything externally; didn't know they were
happening until today. All my harddrives (4 IDE and 2 USB) are just fine as
far as I can tell.

Sometimes these errors occur just before one of the crashes, sometimes they
occur and there is no crash so I'm not sure they are related to the crashes.

I am going to go through the device manager and try an 'update driver' for
each device on my system tonight. Windows update doesn't indicate that there
is anything needed but maybe I will find something new in that effort. What
do you think? Is there a different place I should be looking for device
drivers?

Thanks again for your continuing efforts.

Running programmes written long before the introduction of Windows XP
does raise all kinds of issues. These links may help:

Note the references to drivers.

Some users running older programmes run dual boot systems. However, setting
up a
dual boot system needs to have the older operating system installed before
XP. It
makes for a complicated system and having tried it for a time I found the
trouble not
worth the gain.

I would consider whether the operations carried out on older programmes
could be
migrated to programmes and versions intended for use with Windows XP.

How many hard drives are installed? Are any removable / external? Are you
using

Try HD Tune (freeware). Download and run it and see what it turns up.

BAD IDEA. What POSSIBLE benefit is there in having the system hide
error messages and restart when it'snot working properly?

That setting should be strangled and left for dead on all systems
other than where unattended uptime is more important than preserving
the contents of the HD. Even in that context, it is worse than
useless when errors arise before the OS loads far enough for the
system to work, or become remotely administerable.

I was referring to any drivers for your graphics card, for the chipset
driver, and other added hardware you might have. Generally, one doesn't
rely on driver updates from MS for these items, as the updates from the
manufacturer are generally more up-to-date. However, if this started
happening only 6 months ago, more or less concurrent with installation of
SP2, some manufacturers found it necessary to update their drivers to
accomodate SP2. It might be worth a try.

Hi Gerry,

I will try HD tune and post the results.

I have 4 internal IDE drives and 2 external on USB. I have had 3 different
raid setups on 2 different controllers but they are all out of the system
now. I was using either RAID 0 or 1; one controller on the MB the other was
PCI based. 2 of the IDE drives are on the MB controller, 2 are on a Promise
PCI-based IDE controller. The two USB HDs are usually turned off.

The older programs are all applications and none of them have ever been
running when the error occurred. All of the drivers came with XP or were
downloaded from MS. In fact, on a number of occasions, the error has
occurred after bootup when I have run nothing. I turned on the system,
walked away, and at some point it had the error and rebooted - I had done
nothing except turn on the switch.

Whatever this is, it is something relatively new. I ran XP for the first
two years with very few problems.

I went through EVERY device in the device manager last night and clicked on
update driver. Only one found an update. I have an HP PSC750XI
(printer/scanner/copier - USB attached) and the "new" driver was also
unsigned, downloaded from MS and is on the system now. I also updated the
BIOS just in case that has had anything to do with what has been happening.

I am very curious about the date of your system, did you build it, etc.
Your thousands of signed files is amazing to me since most of the unsigned
files I have came from MS. Many of them are dated 2001. Yours must be later
than that but I'm curious how much later.

Thanks.

Hi,

OK.

FWIW, I went through device manager last night and clicked on update driver
for EVERY device on the system. Found only one where MS had an update. I
have an HP PSC750XI (printer/scanner/copier) on USB and MS had a newer driver
for it. That's on the system now.

I also updated the BIOS from the MB manufacturer today.

I'm waiting to see if those 2 changed anything - it's been quiet since I did
that last night.

Thanks for the suggestion. If the problem is still with me (optimist that I
am) I will go the the manufacturers and see what I can find.

I definitely agree that it's worth a try. Nothing else has worked...

Thanks again.

Leland

Hi,

Thanks for your response. It was turned on before much to my frustration.
Didn't know there was an option to turn it off. It is now off and will
probably stay off, certainly until this is cleared up.

Aside from the issues you mentioned, I'd rather see the error codes as they
pop up than after the fact.

It appears that the event log has captured stuff accurately, at least from
what I have seen since I turned the option off.

Thanks for responding.

Leland

Resolving driver problems without an error report pin pointing the driver
is always going to be difficult. There are various ways the task can be
tackled but some need technical interpretation skills most of us do not
have.

I was hopeful that unsigned drivers might shorten the list for you but that
was
not to be.

My system was rebuilt early in December 2005 by replacing the motherboard,
memory, power supply, CD drive and one of two hard drives. There remain
components from my earlier circa 2000 computer. All peripherals, save for
a colour printer, are from the earlier system but all are no older than
2000.
I have systematically replaced peripherals over the years. I suspect that
were I to replace my HP Scanjet 4300C and my Norton Winfax Pro 10
software I might be down to two unsigned drivers.

It can be helpful to install software to name precisely the hardware on
your system. You need this information when looking for third party drivers.
I ignore offers of drivers from the "driver web sites" and always go for
manufacturers sites.

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about your
computer:
Everest Home Edition (freeware)

You should NOT use any updated drivers supplied by MS. ONLY use
drivers from the original manufacturers.
