I've been working on this for hours and hours now:
XP is stuck in a reboot loop. Can't make it to login screen. Just Welcome
screen and start over. There is a brief glimpse of blue before it reboots
and although it could be the login screen, I'm pretty sure it's an error
message screen.

Can't do Safe Mode or Last Known. chdsk hasn't helped much.

I'm in the Recovery Console off the XP CD, but I'm not sure what I should be
trying to fix. Is there any way to find out what that error says? I've also
tried in the bootlog and it's not there.

Thanks for your help.

I'm having the exact same problem on a laptop. Haven't
had any luck getting it to boot. I have tried to boot
with a 98 disk and use fdisk to delete the partition and
get a disk write error. I've tried diskpart also to no
avail.

If you get an answer let me know...Meanwhile I have
another hard disk on it's way so I can get my laptop back
on line.

Hi Rene,

Repair the Windows XP Installation - Note: You will forfeit all MS Updates.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information
about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or
contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run
WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen,
press ENTER: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is
displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is
selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP. Follow
the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

See if you can boot to Safe Mode - Command Prompt only.

If you can do that, then you can run System Restore by giving the
command
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
and go back to a suitable earlier point before the trouble arose
