reboot after connecting LAN cable

While traveling I sometimes hook into my friend's highspeed internet via
ethernet. It seems that after I connect the cable, I always have to reboot.
Is there a way to avoid this need to reboot? It's a pain since I sometimes
swap the cable back and forth, and my computer takes forever to boot up.

Why do you have to reboot?

Go to Start > Settings > Network Connections and right-click
on your internet connection icon and select "Repair".

Run the following command from a Command Prompt
and report exactly what you see:
ipconfig /all
