Hello... I intend on buying an old copy of Rebel Assault 1 & 2... 1 for
DOS, and 2 for Win95/DOS... and I am curious... will either of them work
on Windows XP Home?

Windows XP Home
AMD AthlonXP 2400+ 2.0GHz
112MB RAM
16MB S3 SavageDDR
Logitech Wingman Extreme3D USB

I am not sure if they even support USB devices... grazie.

Hi Giovanni,

USB support is possible in DOS, here's the scoop:
http://www.freedos.org/freedos/news/technote/179.html
and
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10215

And here's ntcompatible's report on RA 2's compatibility:
http://www.ntcompatible.com/cdetail6799.html

Now taking the above into consideration...

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available,
or search at: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a :-)

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm For sound
issues use: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound Good Luck! :-)

The question was, will either of them even work at all on XP... not will
they support USB devices. Also, those reports are on XP Beta 1... I
don't have XP Beta 1, and nor does anyone I know. Grazie.

Prego Giovanni

It's a safe bet that if it worked on XP during the Beta
then it will work on XP SP1. To be 100% certain I would
have to borrow your game and test it on my system. ;-)

If it doesn't work in a native XP environment, then the DOS
solutions I posted will allow you to play it on your computer.
