Download large file and use stopwatch.

Why can't you use Java?

To measure STR over LAN or WAN, I copy a large single file and measure
transfer time with a watch. With XP PCs at each end of my 100 Mb/s LAN,
with a SOHO router in the middle, I get >9 MB/s using XP's drag'n'drop
between a local HD and a net.mapped remote HD. With my cable-connected
WAN, I FTP a large file between my PC and my area on my ISP's server;
that connection is shared, and the STR depends on time of day (load),
but I'm pretty happy with the usual >400 KB/s downhill STR.
