"Reading CDs

Vista does not see the data I recorded on a CD in XP. It tells me I have to
"prepare the disk".

Is Vista unable to read CDs made in XP??

That's highly unlikely. This isn't a RW CD is it by any chance?

I am having the same issue and not sure what to do either. I can see the
files on the DVD-RW on the XP laptop I burned them from but can not see the
files on the new Vista desktop. The folder names are there but no files are
in the folders. What should I do??

Rewritable CD/DVD media require special packet-writing software. Very likely
such software is installed on the XP machine but not on the Vista machine.
Or possibly the packet-writing formats are different. See:

For what it's worth, personally I can see no possible use whatsoever for
rewritable CD/DVD. Especially now that USB pen drives etc are so cheap and
have such huge storage capacities.

Thanks, Bob, Yes it is CD RW disks that were formatted in XP and had files copied to it in Windows Explorer.

Copy the files to a CD disk rather than a CD RW. Vista should be able to
read that.

Too late. I got rid of my old computer and saved some data on CDRW disks thinking my new computer with Vista would be able to read them. Why on earth is this not possible?? Ned

Because you need packet-writing software installed in order to read and
write rewritable media.

You may have had that installed on the XP machine without realizing it.

Your best bet is to find a machine that can read the disk and copy the data
on it to a USB pen drive or something. Installing packet-writing software at
this point probably isn't a good idea because the different formats aren't
compatible and it's very possible you'll end up with the wrong one.
