For the last day the free newsserver news.readfreenews.net has been
down for me. Does anyone else use this server and are they
experiencing the same problem?

Yes (I use it sometimes), and yes (I can't reach it, either).

I did a quick search this morning to see if anything was posted on
a board somewhere; didn't discover anything, but the sign-up page
at http://cust.readfreenews.net/ has been taken down and replaced
with the statement: "Because of the amount of abuse lately, the
ability to sign up for an account has been terminated."

That doesn't look promising. :(

It's been a while since you couldn't sign up anymore. However I was
able to use the server with no problem since that statement was posted.

Ah; thanks. Didn't know that.

It appears to be a shoe-string operation, though, as the guy's
front page, where he asks for donations, notes that he's running it
on a "ton of old hardware", and that "unfortunately, there have
been multiple disk failures over the last few months because of
this old hardware".

(I don't know how long that statement's been there, though.)

From what I have read Mike lost a couple of hard drives on that system. He
mentioned he would try to bring the system back up as soon as he can using
some other hardware.

You might want to try allnews.readfreenews.net as it is still up and
operational.
