read & unread icons

First time email is read in the morning, all new mail
appears to have been read. How can that be? If outlook is
then checked a couple of hours later, the new mail
appears with unread icon. Any thoughts?
 
Version of Outlook? Type of mail account?

version is 2002. Not sure what you mean by type of mail
account. POP3?
