Read receipts 2003 and XP

I understand with 2003 when I request a read receipt the
recipient can choose whether or not to send one. Does
this depend on whether I am using 2003 to send the email
or whether the recipient is using 2003 to read it?

Does the same apply with XP?

A bit detailed I know but important to me. Any
experience / insight on this would be appreciated.

if they are using Outlook Express, they will also get the
prompt. It will always be their choice whether or not
they send a read receipt. If an email client opens it up
otherwise, then they would be opening themselves up to
virus writers too.
