Read only has 3 states

I've discovered a strange third state of the read only
attribute on a network share.
I'll try to explain it with an example:

John Doe has a home folder \\serverX\homeJD\
He has Full Control on this folder.
When you check the properties of the folder e.g.
\\serverX\homeJD\Docs\ you'll see that the security
settings are correctly inherited and John Doe has Full
Control.
BUT... in the Tab General you'll see that the Read Only
Attribute has an odd state.
If you click it you'll get 3 states:
OFF (not checked)
ON (checked)
The weird state: (checked but grey)(it has this state by
default)

When i set the attribute to OFF and apply it, it will
change back to this odd state immediately.

I think that it inherits this state from somewhere but i
can't figure out where it comes from.

Does anyone have a clue???

The third state is called "indeterminate." It indicates that there may be
some restrictions on files due to permissions. More information in this
