A dell GX-110 With 128 Megs ram, running Windows 2000 SP3
\Office XP.

User has Outlook 2002 and Windows Explorer open. After
opening and closing multiple Word documents through
Explorer, the documents start opening up as "Read Only" If
you close Outlook 2002 the problem does not occur as
frequently.

Any ideas to solve??

Word (winword.exe) and Outlook (outlook.exe) are notorious for not
shutting down properly. Often they hang in their internal shutdown
procedures and never get to the system API call to exit (kill) their
process, so their process remains loaded in memory albeit using much
less memory. Use Task Manager to see if winword.exe is still in memory
after you exit it. It might take half a minute before the process
actually gets killed although the window for it has disappeared. If it
doesn't go away, kill it. These remnant hung stubs of code in memory
can have other debilitating effects in Windows. I've seen Explorer not
open, other applications won't load, OSA (used to select and load Office
files from the Start menu) not load, files cannot be read, and such.
Check Task Manager. If you have exited Word and/or Outlook but their
process remains loaded, kill it.
