Read Only Error...Please Help!

My laptop has recently seemed to develop a mind of its own!

Until recently, when I clicked on the 'My Documents' icon from the start
menu, it would take me to the page where I would see the various folders,
such as 'My Music', and 'My Pictures', etc. However, now when I click on 'My
Documents', it shows me 'Ayd's Documents' (Ayd obviously being myself!) which
I have to click on to get to the page I would see before. Almost as if, the
whole thing has copied itself down one folder, duplicating the 'My Documents'
one.

On top of this, every file has no made itself read only, leading to problems
with some of the programs I use. Each time I unselect read only, it makes
itself read only again straight away.

I have tried everything, I can think of, so please help!!

Thanks

Read-only means nothing for folders. Only a file can be Read-only.

The Read-only check box for folders is there for convenience, it allows you
to change the Read-only attribute of all the files contained in that folder.

Question: One of my special folders (e.g. My Documents, My Music, My
Pictures, Shared Documents, etc) has lost its name, lost its icon, or has
the wrong Task Pane template, how can I get it back?

Answer: This problem can occur if the hidden desktop.ini file in the special
folder is corrupt or missing. Here are the steps to fix this problem:
Illustrated, detailed instructions here:

Scroll down a little and click on Special Folders.

I worked through the points on your website, but what you asked me to cut in
and copy was already there, so there was nothing for me to change.

It also dosn't explain why I now seem to have to click on 'My Documents' to
get into 'Ayd's Documents' again. In essence, I have two 'My documents'
folders.

Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated. Its driving me crazy!

Thanks

Right click the My Documents link on the Start Menu.
Click Properties.
Click the Find Target button.

The C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here folder should open with My
Documents folder highlighted in the right hand pane.
