Read-only after LAN transfer

Greetings,
This is a cry for help.

Scenario
Old laptop with Win2K replaced with a new laptop with XinXPPro.
WinUpate completed, everything works fine.
All data in the old laptop copied in the new one via LAN. Apparently
everything went smooth.

Problem
Folders copied via LAN have a "read only attribute" which in the
"Properties" appears as a checkmark in the corresponding case greyed.
Uncheck, apply to all files and subfolders, click OK. Look again at
the "Properties": same as before. Try again, no change. Again and
again, even via CMD command.
Take propriety of the whole HD, repeat the above steps, nothing: "read
only" checked and greyed.

Apparently, others are experiencing similar problems - see this
thread:

http://www.winguides.com/forums/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=genwinxp&Number=91175&page=&view=&sb=

What's wrong and why? And especially, how to solve the problem?
The laptops belong to my boss, whose PC knowlegde is rather limited.
If I could solve this problem for him, I guess I would gain a few
points in his consideration <g>

Thanks in advance.

As was pointed out in the discussion you link to, the folders really aren't
read-only. It's just another eXasPerating thing that has no explanation, no
real effect. As was pointed out, look at the folders in Detail listing,
show the attributes, and you'll see they are not read only.

OK, but then, while the files in the folders has read-only attribute and I
cannot change them? For example, eudora.ini: I had to delete it and
recreate the accounts ("personalities") from the scratch: eudora didn't
allow me to change anything, "properties" being grayed and staying grayed
whatever I did on the file attributes... :-((

Now that's a different problem - you only mentioned folders before. Can you
change the read only attribute from the command prompt? use: attrib -r
filename wildcards can be used.
