I am having errors while modifying a spreadsheet.

I am running Win Xp and Office 97, and can open and
modify the file once but if I close it and open it again
it wont allow me write access, but only read access to
this file.

Any ideas?

Try cleaning up your windows temp folder and then reopen your workbook.

You may have to reboot.

I have done as suggested and emptied the Windows temp directory with th
same result ie read-only access. I use a
template to record visits for work and when I open the said template i
opens as read only. When I try to save with a new name I get th
message that "Document saved successfully. Cannot be re-opened due t
low memory. Please close the document". Suffice to say I have plenty o
memory (512).If I then reopen it I get another read only document. I a
told to save with a new name and when I do The template is no
protected, I got hold of another copy of the template and it let m
make one change. Since then however I cannot get any document to ope
in anything other than read-only. Even the default new workbook is rea
only although it does not say so at the top of the screen. our help i
much appreciated
