read e-mail

I have outlook xp when e-mail comes in I look at it in the preview pane it
still looks as if it has not been read when I had outlook 2000 it would show
as read if I lingered in the preview pane. How do I change it so e-mail
looks as if they have been read if I view the e-mail for more than 5 seconds?

Change that setting here: Tools menu > Options > Other > Reading Pane

Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting here. And Great Info, Vince. Let me provide some
supplement.

In Outlook XP, we call it as Preview Pane. Reading Pane is first introduced
in Outlook 2003.

Just as Vince mentioned, you can follow the steps below to enable Preview
Pane.

1. In Outlook XP, click Tools menu.
2. In Other tab, click Preview Pane, check "mark messages as read in
preview window", then enter 5 seconds as time interval.
3. Click OK twice to save the setting.
