Reactivation needed after DVD drive firmware update?

I updated my DVD drive firmware (plextor px708a) and
windows said I had to reactivate. That failed by "you
have exceeed your limit" message (1 activation only). So
I had to call the non-toll-free support number and tell
them what happened, of course at my expense.

The guy said I would have to do this EVERY TIME that I
updated the DVD drive firmware. This is crazy.

Has anyone else had such troubles?

Bruce,

I don't understand why you had to dial a toll number. I've had to do phone
activations a number of times and always called a toll-free number to do so.
I assume that you are in the US and thus should have toll-free number access
(unless perhaps you're system was setup as non-US originally?).

Secondly, there is an algorithm that MS uses to trip activation. Changing
one part should NOT ever cause a re-activation (the person you spoke with is
likely mistaken). However, it is cumulative and if you change a number of
components over time you can "trip" the wire. Somehow I doubt that Plextor
will issue that many FW changes to require you to re-activate any time soon.

I just replaced my DVD-RW drive on my primary machine and it did NOT cause
me to re-activate.

Len,

This was a new computer that I had just built a few weeks
before. I had a new OEM copy of XP Home that was
activated for the first time. When I first got the "you
must reactivate" I used the normal internet connection
method (internet was working). The system said "you have
exceeded your number of activations," and this was after
only one activation. Strange, since it was a brand new
install.

So I called the toll-free number, but that only works for
automated entry and I had already been told by the
internet method that I exceeded my activations.

So I called the toll number to talk to a human, which I
did get after about a 2 minute wait. So he got me
activated but did say that I would have this activation
issue every time. I did notice that the computer acted as
though both DVD drives (I have 2) were removed and then
re-installed. So would that count as "4" changes?:

1. remove DVD 1 (with FW update)
2. remove DVD 2 (no change to drive)
3. reinstall (device driver only) DVD 1
4. reinstall (device driver only) DVD 2

All I know is that I had to reactivate for a trivial
reason.

Thanks,
Bruce
