Reactivate after adding USB drive?

I plugged a new TDK USB CR drive into my XP system (up to date as per the
Windows update service). It didn't recognise it. I located a driver on a
companion CD across the network and installed it. It wanted to reboot. On
reboot XP says the system has changed and I have to reactivate. I called the
reactivation line and they confirmed this may be enough to cause
reactivation. This can't be right. Has anybody seen this happen?

Thanks,
Tom

Admittedly, that seems a bit extreme. I have never seen NOR heard of an
external USB device causing you to have to reactivate. That could suck if I
went out and bought a new USB scanner, new USB Digital Camera, a Firewire
Digital camcorder and an USB thumb drive at the same time, eh?
