Trying to create a trust between 2000 and NT domains.
When verifying the trust in AD it give me the following
message.
"There are no logon servers available to service the logon
request"
I have look this up on Technet and it basically says it's
a name resolution issue, and to add the records to WINS. I
have entered the Domain records in the WINS database as a
work around but this I still get the same message.

When trusting the Windows 2000 Domain on NT it works fine,
but not the other way.

Any Ideas?

setup Wins push pull replication

Is your AD natice of mixed mode if native this is a no go

Push pull is setup and it's still in mixed mode.
I have also left plenty of time for replication.

We don't have DNS installed on the network.

We are looking at that very soon.

I tried adding the mappings to the hosts file but this
still gives this message "There are no logon servers
available to service the logon request".

A reboot is on the cards later, mabye this will solve the
problem.

I might put in my $0.02 now!

First, I would suggest that you look at using an LMHosts
file. Just make sure that it is properly configured.

Second, If I read your last post correctly you state that
you do not have DNS set up. I am not sure that I
understand that. I can only assume that you are refering
to the WINNT 4 domain. There is less than a good chance
of having a functional WIN2000 AD Domain when DNS is not
set up ( and configured properly ).

Third, I might take alook at using NETDOM instead of the
ADDT MMC for creating this Trust. NETDOM will work where
the ADDT MMC does not ( assuming that everything else is
set up properly ). I have experienced it myself!
Especially in this so-called "Down-Level" Trust.

NETDOM is a part of the Support Tools, which can be found
in two places: on the WIN2000 Server CD in the Support |
Tools folder or on the WIN2000 Service Pack CD in the
Support | Tools folder. Opt for the Service Pack CD if
possible.

Yep, sorry.

There is no DNS on the NT4 domain and the DNS on the 2k
domain in not working 100% needs looking at.
I will try NETDOM see what happens

I would strongly suggest that you take a look at resolving
the DNS issues on your WIN2000 AD Domain BEFORE continuing.

What type of DNS issues are you having?

Just some general recommedations:

Take a look at the Support Tools ( my favorite tools in
WIN2000! ) and run a couple of the utilities: netdiag /fix
would be the first thing that I would run on each and
every WIN2000 Server ( Member Server, DC ); then run
dcdiag /v and netdiag /v on all your DCs;
repadmin /showreps can be useful as can nltest with
various switches ( not necessarily DNS related ).

There are also some DNS Specific utilities that I have not
yet used. I believe that SONAR can help you. Then there
is ULTRASOUND.

Also, let's not get too high tech and overlook the most
useful of all utilities: PING! NSLookup is also a very
basic DNS utilitiy.

Cary
