Twice when I have urgently needed system restore it has come up with the
message that it was unable to restore, this last time I used the XP CD and
did a repair install that took around 35 minutes - Is SR worth bothering
about?

It has its uses, but don't trust it with your life .. it also has
several problems (of which 'restore points' that let you down when you
need them is probably the worst). It also doesn't restore nearly as much
as some people like to imagine.

Hi GSV

The files that SR monitors/doesn't monitor are listed in:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\filelist.xml

but that file really ought to be left 'as is'.

A very good program for a Registry backup/restore is ERunt:

Please don't misconstrue this - ERunt is *not* a backup program for all Windows files, but is great if your Registry is completely 'worn out'.

I have found the need to use it on 2 or 3 occasions over the last year and a
half, and it has worked well for me.

Can one add to it directories to be left untouched? I would like restore to
leave totally alone

C:\data\ and all its subdirectories. How do I do that?

Thanks.
